Puerto Varas Day 1

Oh what a day we started our vacation with.  It was with a big old bang.  Flight went well, weather was perfect, and rental car agency line was short in people at least.  After an hour we finally got a car, which was not what we had ordered on the Internet, but it fit us and our luggage.  Doors won't close, oh just do it really hard.  OK, doors finally closed.  As we leave the parking lot the ceiling is banging so loudly that you can't talk with others unless shouting and it sounds like a train going by.  Mark wants to go back, but they do not have any other cars for us until later that night.  So we agree to take the car, have lunch, do some grocery shopping, and settle into our cabana.  And then 15 minutes later the tire blows and we are sent off to the side of the road (Mark saved us with his driving skills).  OK, so this is OK, just change the tire and we will have a different car later.  Only the tire won't come off, and then by shear accident I turn the car on and the wheel pops off.  Great, so now to change it, nope the spare won't go on.  So after talking to the car rental place, which seems to think, hit it harder is the answer for all things wrong, doesn't seem to keen to come help us.  So there happens to be a police station close by (they actually watched all of this happening and several of their people drove right by us), Mark and my father-in-law walked the couple of blocks and they sent us someone who could help.  There is a service in Chile, which is for break downs and accidents and they saved us.  The man came, told us there was no way we could drive the car for the wheels were not actually working properly and all the tires were very bald.  So this assistance called for a tow truck (which was free) and within a few minutes they had us on a flat bed tow truck and driving to our hotel.  And when I say they had us on the flat bed, they literally put the 8 passenger van with us in the van up on the flat bed and then delivered us to our hotel. It was so funny when we arrived to the hotel.  We were laughing, they people around were all staring, it was comical.  Definitely a moment to remember.

I took a picture of the guy driving the flat bed tow, as we are sitting in our rental car, on the flat bed.  Notice the big crack in our windshield all the way across the window.  That was already there when we started.  I think this car had seen it's days.

The rental place assured us they would have another car for us by 4pm, then 7pm, then 9pm, and finally it came at 10pm.  But it was a very nice car and we had no problems for the rest of the trip.  I guess we just needed a good story to really remember this trip by!
